Try Assistive Technology
Explore Assistive Technology Before You Decide
Choosing assistive technology (AT) is a personal decision. What works well for one person may not work for another. That’s why trying equipment before buying or requesting it can be so helpful.
The Michigan Assistive Technology Program (MATP), operated by the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition (MDRC), offers free AT demonstrations and device loans for people across Michigan.
AT Demonstrations
An AT demonstration gives you the chance to learn about different types of assistive technology and compare features to see what might work best for you.
Demonstrations are:
- Free
- Available statewide across Michigan
- Personalized to your needs and goals
MATP staff can meet with you in a place that works best for you, including:
- Your home
- Your workplace
- A community location
- A local restaurant or meeting space
During a demonstration, you can:
- Learn about different AT options
- Compare devices and features
- Ask questions
- Explore tools that match your daily life and goals
Sometimes seeing and trying equipment in person makes it easier to decide what may work best for you.
Important to Know
An AT demonstration is different from a formal evaluation or assessment provided by professionals such as occupational therapists or physical therapists.
MATP does not provide medical or clinical assessments. However, staff are happy to work with you and your service providers to help explore technology options that support your recommendations and goals.
AT Device Loans
Sometimes a quick demonstration is not enough. You may want to try assistive technology in your everyday life before deciding if it is the right fit.
MATP’s free device loan program allows you to borrow assistive technology for a longer period of time, usually between 14 and 45 days, depending on availability and your needs.
Device loans can help you:
- Try equipment in your home, school, workplace, or community
- Test different devices before making a purchase
- Learn what works best for your routines and preferences
- Build confidence using new technology
Most loans begin with a demonstration so you can learn how to use the equipment safely and effectively.
MATP staff will work with you to:
- Choose equipment to borrow
- Set up a loan agreement
- Determine the loan period
- Answer questions and provide support during the loan
To learn more about available devices or request to borrow an item, contact MATP at 800-578-0280 or complete a request form.
AT Lending Library
Think about one thing in your day that feels difficult. There may be AT to help you. You can view a sample of available devices in the AT Lending Library.
The lending library includes many types of assistive technology for:
- Communication
- Education
- Employment
- Community living
- Daily activities
Items will continue to be added based on requests and need. If you find an item you want to try, you can contact MATP to request a demonstration and a device loan.
