Employment Success Story: Eric Patrick Thomas

Employment Success Story: Eric Patrick Thomas

Where do you work, and how long have you worked there?

"I work from my own business. I started my business in November 2011 in Flint. I also own the brand inspire."

What parts of your job do you enjoy the most?

"Everything except administrative and accounting work. I like the design creation, branding, taking an idea into fruition, marketing and advertising, and networking to build relationships."

Can you share a moment when you felt proud of your contributions at work?

"Getting the inspire trademark. One time our brand created shirts for children battling cancer, and it made them feel good when they wore the shirts."

Can you describe how your employment has improved your life outside of work?

"Working has made me more independent and grow as a person. I was able to purchase a home in the community. I have met a lot of people while owning my own business. I also took a trip to Los Angeles to be a guest on Shark Tank."

What advice would you give to people with disabilities looking for a job in their community?

"Keep looking, do your homework, understand your rights, contact Michigan rehab services, and seek whatever you need to find employment. Find something that you like to do. Don't compromise!"

What advice would you give to employers wanting to hire people with disabilities?

"I would say to employers that everyone is employable. As an employer, you should ask: how can I make my business culture more accessible to the disability community? Really listen to what the person can offer your business; don't focus on the challenges. Those barriers can be addressed, but the focus is on the person and how they can be a great addition to your company."
