Traumatic Brain Injury and Public Services in Michigan

This free online training course is provided to anyone interested in learning more about TBI, including service providers, persons with a brain injury, and family members of persons with TBI. In January 2012, the original modules were updated and training areas for pediatric and adults were added. Each training is self-paced, and can be completed over the course of multiple sessions. An extensive list of resources and a glossary are provided. Professionals have the opportunity to earn continuing education (CE) credits towards their respective licenses, some are available from more than one training. Please see the table below for a breakdown of CE credits by training.
Traumatic Brain Injury & Public Services in Michigan consists of four modules that describe
- The significance of TBI and introductory information on brain functions.
- Common physical, behavioral, and cognitive impairments and strategies for interacting with individuals with these impairments.
- Methods of screening and assessment of TBI.
- Public services that are available for individuals with a TBI.
Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury consists of four modules that
- Describe and define pediatric TBI as well as explain prevalence and predictors of outcomes.
- Specify cognitive effects of pediatric TBI and the effects on academic skills and progress as well as common needs of these children.
- Highlight psychosocial and psychiatric consequences of pediatric TBI and the special needs of child survivors.
- Explain the social consequences and the impacts on social and family relations of pediatric TBI.
Cognitive & Behavioral Consequences of Traumatic Brain Injury in Adults consists of four modules that
- Explain basic information on the types, frequency, and severity of adult TBI.
- Define the cognitive effects of adult TBI.
- Discuss cognitive recovery after a TBI and provide recommendations to address those deficits.
- Review the psychological effects and recovery expectations of TBI in adults and the impact on family functioning.
TBI and Substance Use consists of five modules that are focused on
- Problematic substance use and how it relates to brain injury.
- How to talk with clients about the risks of substance use after brain injury and how to screen for problematic substance use.
- Integrated treatment.
- Models of care for co-occurring brain injury and substance use.
- Three case studies.
