LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) today announced the launch of a new free mobile application for smartphones designed to help Michigan citizens and their families prepare for emergencies. The Michigan Prepares Emergency Plan app, developed by the MDCH Office of Public Health Preparedness (OPHP), allows users to create, manage, and export emergency plans from their mobile devices.

“Smartphones are a significant part of our lives, and we keep a lot of important information and tools on our phones that we might need during an emergency,” said Nick Lyon, Director of the MDCH. “With the winter months and colder weather approaching, now is the perfect time to utilize some of these resources to create a basic emergency plan and share it with family members prior to needing one.”

With the Michigan Prepares Emergency Plan app, Michiganders can easily import emergency contacts from their phone into their emergency plan, designate meeting places, create an emergency kit for your home, and have quick access to fact sheets and links to more information about common hazards in Michigan. Once the plan is complete, a printable version can be easily emailed to you and your emergency contacts so the entire family can be prepared for an emergency, even when smartphones aren’t available.

“Preparing to stay healthy and safe during an emergency begins with individuals and families. Michiganders need to know that it can take up to 72 hours after a disaster before help can arrive,” said Dr. Jacqueline Scott, Director of the OPHP. “Having a plan for yourself and your family can help ensure that in a time of real emergency everyone will stay healthy and safe. This app is an invaluable tool that will help people prepare for emergencies.”

The Michigan Prepares Emergency Plan app is available for both iPhone and Android devices. Michigan citizens are encouraged to try out the new app and to visit the Michigan Prepares website at www.michigan.gov/prepares to learn more about how to stay healthy and safe during emergencies.
