MDHHS awards Older Adult of the Year Award to Flint volunteer Melinda Anderson

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) awarded Melinda Anderson of Flint the Older Adult of the Year Award during the 2025 Older Michiganians Day celebration, which took place on the Michigan Capitol lawn in early May.

“The Older Adult of the Year Award is an annual state tradition to celebrate the important contributions that older adult volunteers make in Michigan each year,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “The award recognizes an individual whose community has been enhanced through their local engagement, volunteerism and acts of service.”

“It was my honor to present this year’s award to Melinda Anderson, whose lifetime of volunteer service has been so impactful to families in Flint and Genesee County,” said Meghan Groen, MDHHS chief deputy director for Health Services. “Through decades of service she has addressed critical community needs, including literacy access, civic engagement and neighborhood revitalization.”

In 2015, Anderson founded the Community Outreach for Family and Youth Center New Beginnings Literacy Program. For the past 10 years, she has led efforts to provide tutoring services for adults and youth. She serves as chairperson of the Genesee County Literacy Coalition, where she works with stakeholders to address service gaps and improve access to education.

Anderson also facilitated the creation of community gardens in food deserts, established Little Free Libraries and supported beautification projects that uplift neighborhoods. She has facilitated a variety of service-learning projects, including Get Out the Vote efforts and the Brennan Community Oral History Project.

The Older Adult of the Year Award is a tradition dating back to 1974.  Nominations are sent in from a variety of agencies across the state, including area agencies on aging, senior centers and places of worship. The award is presented annually on Older Michiganians Day and is sponsored by Consumers Energy.

Older Michiganians Day is organized by the Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan, a statewide association that advocates on behalf of Michigan’s older adults. This year, approximately 500 people attended to show their support for the needs of older adults across Michigan.
