Centering Voices: Michigan's Plan to Address Sickle Cell Disease Across the Lifespan

Michigan’s Sickle Cell Disease Strategic Plan is a bold commitment to ensure that every individual living with sickle cell disease (SCD) in our state has access to high-quality, integrated, and patient-centered care—along with the essential support services they need to thrive.


To do this, MDHHS has identified six goals:

  • Goal One

    Implement system changes that center the needs of the SCD community through a collaborative approach.

  • Goal Two

    Ensure access to quality, integrated sickle cell treatment and support services statewide.

  • Goal Three

    Utilize standards of care and implement protocols that improve patient outcomes.

  • Goal Four

    Improve prescription of, and adherence to, disease-modifying therapies.

  • Goal Five

    Provide continuous education to increase awareness of information, best practices, and resources for SCD across the state and for priority groups (e.g. people with SCD and their caregivers, health professionals, general public, schools, and employers).

  • Goal Six

    Establish and track metrics to improve health-related outcomes.
