The Family Center recognizes the unique role of siblings of children with special health care needs. They are often the person who has the longest relationship with the individual with special needs across their lifespan. Brothers and sisters have their own perspective and relationship with their sibling with special needs. Because of this, they have their own support needs.

The Family Center works with the Sibling Support Project to create opportunities to support siblings. The Sibling Support Project is a national program dedicated to the life-long and ever-changing concerns of brothers and sisters of people with special developmental, health, and mental health needs. They developed the Sibshop curriculum for siblings of children with special needs. Sibshops provide siblings with peer support and information in a fun and lively setting. If you would like to find a Sibshop near you, you can visit the Sibling Project website.

  • The Family Center offers Sibshop Facilitator Training every other year . It is open to parents and professionals interested in becoming certified facilitators. The two-day training is held in person and includes the opportunity to experience Sibshops firsthand.

  • The Family Center also offers small Sibshop Grants to certified facilitators. The purpose of the grants is to help certified facilitators to host Sibshops in their local communities. Grants are offered yearly up to $1500. Grants applications are accepted starting in the Spring and funding is dispersed based on the fiscal year starting October 1st.
