Michigan Department of Community Health Director, James K. Haveman, Jr., today announced the Department is seeking applicants to receive funding to address medical equipment and technology issues in rural communities. In recognition of the special health care needs faced by the residents of Michigan's rural areas, the Legislature has identified this continuation funding for the Rural Health Initiatives Program in the Community Health budget for fiscal year 2001.
"Improvements in medical equipment and telehealth technologies are occurring rapidly and hold great promise for the future. In rural areas, telecommunications and telehealth technologies can enhance the quality of care in rural health care facilities," said Haveman. "With these funds, we hope to expand networking opportunities that promote partnerships, reduce duplication and maximize available resources by harnessing the power of telehealth and advanced medical technology."
The Department will distribute $3.2 million to projects in rural Michigan through a matching grant program with a maximum award amount of $200,000.
Rural Health Initiative Medical Equipment and Technology funds are available for projects that focus on improving health status and health care outcomes, such as:
- Developing rural health care networks;
- Purchasing telehealth and other needed medical equipment items;
- Implementing chronic care models that promote service integration (e.g., stroke teams); and/or
- Initiating or expanding non-emergency transportation programs.
Completed applications, including one original and seven copies, are due no later than 5:00 p.m., June 15, 2001. Copies of the request for proposal, which includes the application and a comprehensive package of instructions, can be downloaded from the Department of Community Health website at http://www.mdch.state.mi.us and by clicking on "MDCH Rural Health Initiative RFP."
Organizations eligible to apply for Rural Health Medical Equipment and Technology funds include various rural public and non-profit health care and human service entities, such as: hospitals, community and migrant health centers, tribal councils, health departments, community mental health authorities, commissions on aging, area agencies, medical control authorities, local transit agencies and local governmental entities.
Eligible organizations must be located within one of Michigan's 58 rural counties: Alcona, Alger, Alpena, Antrim, Arenac, Baraga, Barry, Benzie, Branch, Cass, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Chippewa, Clare, Crawford, Delta, Dickinson, Emmet, Gladwin, Gogebic, Grand Traverse, Gratiot, Hillsdale, Houghton, Huron, Ionia, Iosco, Iron, Isabella, Kalkaska, Keweenaw, Lake, Leelanau, Luce, Mackinac, Manistee, Marquette, Mason, Mecosta, Menominee, Missaukee, Montcalm, Montmorency, Newago, Oceana, Ogemaw, Ontongon, Osceola, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle, Roscommon, Sanilac, Schoolcraft, Shiawassee, St. Joseph, Tuscola and Wexford.
