May 15, 2001

The Michigan Department of Community Health and the Arthritis Plan Steering Committee will release the Michigan Arthritis Action Plan on Thursday, May 17, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. in the Senate Appropriations room, 3rd floor of the State Capitol building in Lansing.

Dr. David R. Johnson, Michigan Department of Community Health Chief Medical Executive; Dr. David Fox, Chief of Rheumatology at the University of Michigan; Michelle Glazier, President and CEO of the Arthritis Foundation Michigan Chapter; Dr. Joseph Sniezek, Chief of the Arthritis Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and former Olympic gymnast Tuovi Chochrane will release the plan on Thursday.

The groundbreaking plan provides Michigan with a clear roadmap for preventing and reducing the burden of a health condition that affects one in six Michigan residents. Hundreds of Michigan citizens and over 80 health professionals, university researchers, and national consultants were involved in developing the plan.

The Michigan Arthritis Action Plan has 17 recommendations to improve Michigan's response to arthritis in the areas of public awareness, community health education, health provider education, worksite and school education, and ongoing surveillance.
