Informed Consent for Abortion Website Now Online
June 12, 2001
Michigan Department of Community Health Director, James K. Haveman, Jr., today announced that the informed consent for abortion website is now available online.
Michigan's informed consent for abortion legislation ensures that women seeking an abortion receive factual statutorily required written materials about abortion procedures, development of the human fetus, prenatal care and parenting at least 24-hours prior to an abortion procedure.
Public Act 345 of 2000, which will go into full effect on August 12, 2001, will allow Internet access to the informed consent for abortion documents. It is the only authorized Internet location for a woman to obtain the written information required by the Informed Consent statute. Once a woman has reviewed the information on the Internet, she can print off a confirmation form which verifies that she has reviewed the information and to take it with her to the physician.
"Women can already receive this information in person, through registered mail or by fax delivery from her health care provider. Now women will be able to utilize the Internet to receive this factual information at least 24 hours before an abortion in performed," said Haveman. "This technology will assist us in our efforts to ensure that women have access to accurate and factually correct information before undergoing an abortion."
In addition to information on different surgical abortion procedures, the written and Internet materials also include information on the use of Mifepristone and Misoprostol, which have been approved to end an early pregnancy.
The informed consent for abortion information can be found at the Department of Community Health website at http://www.mdch.state.mi.us and by clicking on "Informed Consent for Abortion."
