Flint needs foster parents; agencies are providing water support

For Immediate Release: August 30, 2016

FLINT, Mich. – Child welfare agencies are asking Flint residents who are foster parents or are considering opening their homes to children how the agencies can better meet their needs related to the Flint water emergency.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and its partner agencies are holding a pair of foster home community information events in Flint on Wednesday, Aug. 31. They are from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 609 E. Fifth Ave. at Saginaw Street in Flint.

As part of an ongoing effort to provide support to Flint foster parents, a panel of health and environmental experts will share information about how foster parents can get help in dealing with issues related to the city’s water. Topics will include community resources, water resources and foster parent support services. There will be a question-and-answer session. The agencies also will survey attendees so that they can better serve the needs of foster parents.

“We need foster parents in Flint and around the state to provide loving homes to children who have been the victims of abuse or neglect,” said Steve Yager, director of the MDHHS Children’s Services Agency. “We understand that the water emergency in Flint creates additional challenges for all families – including foster families. We want to make sure our foster families are getting answers to the questions they have about the water so that they are comfortable they can safely provide much-needed care for vulnerable children.”

Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties, Samaritas – formerly Lutheran Social Services – and Ennis Center for Children in Flint are cosponsoring the Wednesday meetings.

Serving on the panel are Mark Durno, supervisory engineer for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; Bryce Feighner, chief of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Office of Drinking Water and Municipal Assistance; George Krisztian, MDEQ Flint Action Plan coordinator; and Dr. Eden Wells, MDHHS chief medical executive.
