MDHHS hosts public hearing on weatherization state plan April 6

LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is hosting a virtual public hearing on its 2026 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program State Plan from 2 to 2:30 p.m., Monday, April 6. 

The Weatherization Assistance Program provides energy conservation and related health and safety services for eligible low-income households at no cost to residents. MDHHS contracts with local weatherization operators at Community Action Agencies across the state to provide the services.  

The purpose of the hearing is to receive comments from interested Michigan residents about the plan, which covers the period of July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. Attendees should register online for the virtual hearing.  

Copies of the Michigan Weatherization Assistance Program State Plan may be obtained for review by emailing MDHHS-BCAEO@michigan.gov. Written comments regarding the plan will be accepted through Friday, April 10, and should be emailed with the subject “DOE WAP State Plan Comments” to MDHHS-BCAEO@michigan.gov.  
 
The 2026 state plan includes the following changes: 

  • Confirmation of subgrantees as determined by the 2025 statewide procurement. 
  • Updated technical documents as submitted to DOE. 
  • Updated training and technical assistance plan. 
  • Updates throughout State Plan.  
  • Updates throughout the Health and Safety Plan. 
  • Planning budget based on 2025 numbers that will be updated when DOE releases final allocations.
