Can I choose any dentist?
You can choose any dentist near you who accepts your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan. Find an HKD dentist using your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan online. Choose from the Blue Cross Blue Shield directory or the Delta Dental directory. When you call to schedule a visit, be sure to tell the office your child has Healthy Kids Dental.
When does coverage begin?
You will receive a letter from Michigan ENROLLS letting you know which Healthy Kids Dental plan your child is enrolled in and the start date. The start date of enrollment in the plan will be the first day of the month that MDHHS is notified that your child has Medicaid. For example, if we find out your child has Medicaid on October 24, 2018, the start date of the Health Kids Dental plan will be October 1, 2018.
You will receive a dental plan ID card and a list of dentists in your area. Note: Your child's ID card is permanent, so you will not receive a new card each year.
Will my child's Healthy Kids Dental plan make payments to the dentist? Or will I receive a bill?
Your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan will make payments directly to dentists. Any Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements that you receive from your child's dental plan are not bills.
Do I have to pay?
As long as your child sees a dentist who accepts their Healthy Kids Dental plan, you do not have to pay for covered services. If your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan doesn't cover a service, you must pay for that service.
What happens if my child doesn't go to a participating dentist?
Your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan will only cover services from a dentist who accepts that plan. If your child visits a dentist who doesn't take your child's HKD plan, you will have to pay for their visit.
Does Healthy Kids Dental cover all dental services?
Healthy Kids Dental covers many dental services, but not all. Visit your Healthy Kids Dental plan's website to see what's covered Or, take a look at the your plan's Healthy Kids Dental member handbook for the full list of covered services.
What should I do in case of a dental emergency?
In the event of a dental emergency, call your child's dentist's office. Ask what you should do. If the emergency is life threatening, call 911.
If you aren't in Michigan when the emergency happens, call your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan to get help finding a dentist. The phone number will be on your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan card. Note: You do not have to go to an HKD dentist for emergencies outside of Michigan.
Before your child gets treatment, tell the dental office your child is in a Healthy Kids Dental plan. The office needs to call the Healthy Kids Dental Plan for information and billing help. This phone number can be found on your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan card. This is very important.
What if my child needs specialty care?
Any specialty dental care must come from a dentist who accepts your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan. If the specialist does not accept the HKD plan, the plan will not pay for the services. Ask your child's dentist for a referral to a specialist in your area who accepts your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan.
My child's Healthy Kids Dental plancard has a different number than his/her Social Security number. Is that wrong?
No. Identification numbers have changed from Social Security numbers to the 10-digit state-assigned Medicaid ID number. (This is the same number included on your mihealth card.) If you still have an old card, please request a new one from your child's Healthy Kids Dental plan.
