Clinical and Environmental Inorganic Unit

Overview

The Inorganic Units offers a comprehensive range of clinical and environmental laboratory testing to promote healthier communities through partnerships, communication, and technical innovation. The laboratory spans approximately 1,500 square feet and includes a cleanroom dedicated to clinical testing areas. This facility enables the testing using advanced technologies such as ICP-MS, LC/GC-ICP-MS, ICP-AES, and Thermal decomposition/Atomic absorption and is recognized by the EPA as a National Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program (NLLAP) for the analysis of lead in dust and soil samples. 

Key Collaborations

  • Michigan Lead Safe Program and Childhood lead Poisoning Prevention Programs (CLPPP): Detecting lead hazards in housing and treating lead-poisoned children in Michigan
  • Department of Environmental Health (DEH): Eat Safe Fish Guide, Biomonitoring and surveillance testing across the State of Michigan
  • Food Emergency Response Network (FERN)– an integrated group of food laboratories at local, state and federal levels to detect, identify, respond to and recover from emergencies involving chemical contamination of food.
  • Laboratory Response Network for Chemical Threats (LRN-C): National network of local and state public health laboratories that respond to chemical terrorism and other public health emergencies

Staff Overview:

The Inorganic Units are comprised of two Unit Managers; Environmental Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELLAP) Technical Manager; ELLAP QA Manager; and scientists with expertise in clinical and environmental laboratory practices. The staff has extensive experience in multi-element analysis, method development, validation, and documentation. The laboratory is accredited, and the laboratory's technical managers assure adherence to EPA, AIHA LAP, CAP and CLIA accreditation standards.
