MDCH Explore Lab Science Program to Host Youth Fishing Event in Lansing
July 23, 2014
LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Bureau of Labs (BOL) Explore Lab Science Program is hosting a fishing outing for students at Hawk Island Park in Lansing, Mich. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 2. Youth grades K – 12 and their families are encouraged to attend the event to learn about and explore the field of lab science.
During the fishing outing, students will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor science experiments, games, and a fishing contest. Participants will compete to win great prizes including annual passes to Ingham County Parks, science kits, and promotional items. While registration is not required, it is recommended to ensure that each child receives an Explore Lab Science Activity Packet. To register for the event, visit http://gofish.questionpro.com/.
A limited number of fishing rods will be available onsite for attendees to share, and bait will be provided. Children and adults are welcome to use the Explore Lab supplies or to bring their own. A fishing license is not required for anyone that is 17 years of age or younger. However, parents and adults who would like to fish must purchase a fishing license. For more information about fishing licenses and fees, visit the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) at https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10363_14518_65243-305564--,00.html.
The goal of the MDCH Explore Lab Science Program is to introduce children to lab science at an early age. By introducing students at an early age to laboratory science, the Program aims to pique the curiosity of Michigan youth into exploring science as field for later in life when deciding on a college major or career. It's anticipated that all science fields will be stressed by workforce shortages and programs such as these are critical to preventing those shortages.
