Celebrating 2016 Successes
December 22, 2016
We’d like to thank all of our employees for their dedication and hard work throughout the past year, serving the health and human services needs of our customers and making Michigan a better place to live.
Here are just a few examples of the great work our divisions are doing:
- Provided food assistance to 1,911,042 people in Fiscal Year 2016.
- Reached nearly 1.4 million people either in direct interventions or outreach activities to promote healthy eating and physical activity during the first eight months of 2016 (through the Michigan Health and Wellness 4 X 4 Plan). As a result, Michigan is now the 16th most obese state nationwide, rather than the fifth most obese state in 2012, when the effort began.
- Helped 937,707 people receive health care through the Healthy Michigan Plan in Fiscal Year 2016.
- Provided assistance to 12,129 smokers looking to kick the habit through our Michigan Tobacco Quitline.
- Identified $153.3 million in public assistance fraud, cost savings and established program disqualifications through our Office of Inspector General Enforcement Division in Fiscal Year 2016.
- Worked with partner agencies to finalize 2,015 adoptions of children in foster care.
- Helped more than 100,000 people assess whether they or a loved one is a problem gambler through an online quiz offered through an MDHHS website.
- Reduced the vaccination waiver rate in Michigan by 35 percent in 2016 through education efforts and collaboration with stakeholder groups.
- Provided breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services to nearly 7,300 low-income, uninsured and underinsured women and helped 1,400 insured women obtain breast and cervical cancer screening services in Fiscal Year 2016.
- Helped families remove barriers to success by providing health and human services in 250 schools in 33 counties through our Pathways to Potential program.
These are just a few of the ways our department helps the people of Michigan. Please joins us in celebrating these accomplishments. We look forward to continuing to serve the people of Michigan.
