Tracing Native American Heritage
Resources for tracing Indian Heritage
Several resources are available when attempting to trace Indian heritage. The following list is just a few that should get you started. Only a tribe or the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs may verify Indian ancestry. For more information, such as application and enrollment, contact the Tribal Enrollment Office of the tribe(s) indicated in your genealogy search results.
Library of Michigan
The Abrams Historical Collection is ranked as one of the top ten genealogical collections in the United States. In addition to traditional genealogy materials which grow every year, the library has recently compiled a new bibliography of materials held by the Library which pertain to Native Americans specifically. See the Genealogy section of the website for a brief listing of resources.
