Studies on smoking and hookah use in the Arab and Chaldean American communities found higher smoking rates and lower quitting rates when compared with national and Michigan data for other population groups.
A recent study found the current cigarette smoking rate among Arab and Chaldean Americans to be 18.4 percent. This is lower than the average adult smoking rate among the general population in Michigan in 2018 (18.9 percent), but higher than the national average (17 percent) for 2016.
For hookah use, the same study found a very high rate of current use — 34.1 percent in 2017, compared with 33.5 percent in 2009.
We partner with several community organizations, such as the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) and the Chaldean Community Foundation, to promote quitting tobacco and health education in the Arab/Chaldean American community.
