The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has summarily suspended the license to practice medicine of William Clay Sokoll, M.D., based, in part, on his convictions in the 23rd Judicial Circuit, in Arenac County, Michigan.
On April 16, 2008, Sokoll was convicted of one felony count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, and one count of prescribing a controlled substance, a misdemeanor. As a result, Sokoll, 53, was sentenced to nine months in jail, and he was ordered to pay restitution, fines, costs, and fees totaling $4,156.37. Further, Sokoll allegedly prescribed controlled substances to multiple patients with known pain management and substance abuse problems.
On Nov. 26, 2008, MDCH issued an order immediately suspending Sokoll's license pursuant to the Public Health Code, which provides for the mandatory summary suspension of a health professional's license upon the conviction of a felony, a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for a maximum term of two years, or a controlled substance-related conviction. An administrative hearing will be scheduled to address the status of Sokoll's license to practice medicine.
