Michigan Chronic Disease Registry (MiCDR) Advisory Board

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is working to establish the Michigan Chronic Disease Registry (MiCDR) Advisory Board to improve chronic disease monitoring.

In Michigan, more than 6 million individuals have chronic conditions, contributing to over 60% of the adult population having a chronic disease. It is important for MDHHS, local public health, and the Michigan communities we serve to understand the current state of chronic disease and effectively address their burden.

Michigan is one of the first states to develop a near real-time chronic disease registry utilizing electronic health record data statewide, which is an important step in modernizing public health systems.

The MiCDR Advisory Board will provide recommendations on what chronic disease information is collected. They will contribute to improving chronic disease prevention through the use of the collected data for disease monitoring, program design, and interventions.

The MiCDR Advisory Board members will examine the public health need for the collection of proposed reportable chronic conditions and provide their recommendation to the MDHHS director. The MiCDR Advisory Board will serve as an advisory body and will be comprised of individuals representing various backgrounds and organizations.

The board may request assistance from the department to inform their recommendation regarding the addition or removal of a chronic disease as needed. This information may include: requesting supplementary information from the individual or party proposing the chronic disease; convening subject-matter experts or individuals with knowledge of the particular condition; or assembling ad-hoc subcommittees.

Participating in the council will provide opportunities to guide and impact statewide efforts to address the needs of individuals affected by chronic conditions. These opportunities include making formal recommendations to the director of MDHHS and other activities as determined by the board.

An administrative rule went into effect May 1, 2024, creating a process for establishing reporting rules for chronic conditions. Details of the rule can be found here: Michigan Administrative Code – R 330.131 to R 330.136.
