If you plan to move out of state make sure that your current support order allows for you to relocate out of state with the children. It is advised that you contact your local Friend of the Court before leaving Michigan.
If you are receiving child support payments on a debit card, and you will not be receiving public assistance in the new state, you do not need to do anything. Child support will continue as if you were still in Michigan. Make sure your local Friend of the Court has your current address.
If you are receiving child support payments directly into your bank account and you will change to a new bank, please contact the Michigan State Disbursement Unit.
If you begin receiving public assistance in the new state, you will probably be required to open a case with the child support agency there. The local agency in the other state will assist you with this when you apply for public assistance.
Children Moving Out of State
If your child moves out of state, you must continue to make your child support payments as specified in your court order. You do not need to change anything.
Child Support Order in Another State
If you have a child support order in another state and are the custodial parent receiving public assistance in Michigan, you will be contacted by the Office of Child Support to provide information about the non-custodial parent and your existing court order.
If you are not receiving public assistance in Michigan, you are not required to do anything. You should continue receiving your child support payments as you have when you were in your original state, provided you have supplied them with your new address or are receiving electronic payments.
If you are a non-custodial parent, you must continue to pay your child support order as you have been.
Non-custodial Parent in Another State
If you want to start a case in Michigan and are receiving public assistance in Michigan, you will be contacted by the Office of Child Support to provide information about the noncustodial parent. A child support case will automatically start for you.
If you are not receiving public assistance in Michigan and wish to apply for child support services, you can complete a Child Support Services Application/Referral form.
