Injury and Violence Data
Injuries are a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. In Michigan, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among people aged 1-44 years old. They are also a leading cause of death in all other age groups. Intentional injuries are also leading causes of death in many age groups. Intentional injuries include homicides and suicides.
Injuries often occur in predictable patterns, with known risk factors among distinct populations. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) tracks and analyzes injury-related data to look at trends over time and identify high-risk populations. This information can then be used to inform communities and policymakers. Also, it can be used to guide data-driven injury and violence prevention programs.
