Rural Oral Health
Across Michigan’s 83 counties, 53 are officially considered rural and nearly 95% of our state’s land is made up of these beautiful, close-knit communities. From peaceful forests to bustling small towns, rural Michigan is known for its natural beauty, strong community ties, and a shared spirit of resilience.
But for many residents, getting the dental care they need remains a challenge. Workforce shortages and limited access to oral health services have affected rural areas for decades.
That’s why, in late 2024, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Oral Health Program (MDHHS–OHP) launched an initiative focused on partnering with rural communities and organizations to expand access to care, strengthen the dental workforce, and support brighter, healthier smiles across Michigan.
Together, we can help ensure every Michigander — no matter where they live — has access to quality oral health care.
