Immunization Recommendations for Michigan
Guidance
MDHHS follows trusted vaccine schedules from:
- American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
- American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)
- American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)
Coverage
Most Michigan health plans still cover childhood vaccines at no cost to families.
All routine childhood, adolescent, adult, and pregnancy‑related vaccines remain recommended in Michigan.
Availability
Vaccines recommended by AAP, AAFP, and ACOG remain widely available across Michigan.
MDHHS has provided a Standing Recommendation to guide providers to limit barriers to vaccine access where possible.
Overview
In October 2025, the Michigan Advisory Committee on Immunizations (MACI) approved a resolution to endorse the adoption of immunization schedules published by AAP, AAFP and ACOG as the standards of care for immunization practices within Michigan. MDHHS and MACI encourage the implementation of these schedules in clinical and community practices.
The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) are advising Michiganders that, despite the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announcing an updated childhood vaccine schedule, most health insurance plans will continue to cover childhood vaccines without cost-sharing.
Health care providers in Michigan: When determining what vaccines are recommended by age group and/or risk factors, please use the immunization schedules from the professional societies.
Michigan’s Standing Immunization Recommendations
Michigan continues to follow evidence‑based childhood and adolescent vaccine guidance despite recent federal changes that removed several routine immunization recommendations at the national level.
To ensure clarity for families and providers, Michigan Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian has issued a Standing Recommendation directing clinicians to use the immunization schedules developed by:
- The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) – Child & Adolescent Immunization Schedule
- The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) – Adult Immunization Schedule
- The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) - Vaccine schedule during pregnancy
These schedules remain the trusted, science‑based standards for protecting children against vaccine‑preventable diseases.
MDHHS recommendation reinforces that the vaccines removed from the federal routine schedule—including rotavirus, meningococcal, hepatitis A and B, influenza, COVID‑19, and RSV—are still recommended for all children by state health experts and leading medical organizations.
