Ebony Hemphill is a Detroit native who relocated to Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1999 to pursue higher education and build her professional career. A deeply personal experience, her son’s wrongful involvement in the juvenile justice system, led her to found Bent Not Broken, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit launched in 2024. As Executive Director, Ebony leads with purpose and conviction, offering hands-on support and advocacy for families navigating school disciplinary systems and legal consequences. Her leadership is rooted in the belief that young people deserve second chances and supportive environments, not punishment.
Under Ebony’s direction, Bent Not Broken has become a beacon for community-centered solutions to systemic issues like the school-to-prison pipeline, and juvenile court fines and fees. Through initiatives such as Family Justice Hubs and youth leadership programs, she empowers participants to advocate for themselves, set meaningful goals, and access essential resources. Ebony’s work includes advising state policymakers, promoting diversion alternatives, and fostering collaborations that uplift youth and families. Her passion, resilience, and dedication continue to inspire transformation throughout Michigan.
