ONP Grants and Pilot Projects
Clinical Preceptor Pilot Program
-
The ONP, in partnership with the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Nursing (CON), completed a pilot project that provided incentives for clinical preceptors working with MSU’s Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) students. Incentive amounts were based on the number of clinical hours preceptors committed to completing over two semesters.
MSU CON previously had a general fund partnership with the ONP to provide stipends to PMHNP students who committed to two years of service after completing the program. As the project progressed, the college faced increasing challenges in securing and retaining clinical preceptors for advanced practice nursing students—a difficulty shared by many programs across the state.
To help address this issue and gather information about clinical preceptor recruitment/retention efforts, the Clinical Placement Incentive pilot was launched alongside the existing project. Its goals were to support student progression and program completion, conduct an environmental scan, and generate data to inform external partners, other schools of nursing, and legislative decision‑makers about clinical placement concerns and potential solutions.
The attached report provides comprehensive project results. For more information, please contact Casey Klein, ONP Section Manager, at kleinc7@michigan.gov.

Nursing Summer Camps
-
In fall 2024, the Office of Nursing Programs (ONP) launched a grant initiative in collaboration with Board of Nursing-approved schools across Michigan. The project supported summer nursing camps designed to introduce primary and secondary school-aged children to nursing as a potential career path.
To strengthen outreach and enhance the student experience, ONP provided supplemental funding to expand and enrich existing camp programs. 10 nursing schools participated, receiving support for their 2025 summer camps. The project yielded positive outcomes and measurable success in engagement and impact. At the conclusion of the project, each school submitted an implementation plan detailing their camp activities, the number of students reached, and other valuable insights.
Schools or organizations interested in offering similar nursing camps are encouraged to contact the ONP for guidance and resources. For more information, please reach out to Casey Klein, ONP Section Manager, at kleinc7@michigan.gov.
