Engler Announces $3 Million Available for Programs to Reduce and Prevent Drug Use and Crime

Governor John Engler has announced that up to $3 million is available for drug and violence prevention programs targeting high-risk and out-of-school youth, and other safe and drug-free community's prevention initiatives. The funding is effective October 1, 2001 through September 30, 2002 and the application deadline is March 16, 2001.

"Communities throughout Michigan are addressing the problems associated with drug use and the crimes resulting from this drug use," said Engler. "These funds are available to assist both large and small communities help address these problems."

To be considered for an award, an applicant must:
** represent either juvenile and probate courts, detention centers, parent groups, community-wide coalitions, community-based organizations and agencies or other public and private non-profit entities;
** implement a community-based prevention program;
** be primarily focused on drug and violence prevention services targeting youth-direct services;
** incorporate age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive programs and strategies;
** serve delinquent youth, out-of-school youth, youth in detention or youth not ordinarily served by schools;
** incorporate a prevention philosophy emphasizing "no-use" of drugs and a "zero tolerance" approach to drug use and violence.

Those interested in applying for funding are invited to attend one of the five Grant Application Workshops to be held throughout the state.
