WIC Program to Recognize Immunization Efforts

March 30, 2001

Michigan Department of Community Health Director, James K. Haveman, Jr., today announced the Michigan Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program will recognize agencies for their efforts to improve immunization rates at the WIC conference next week.

The conference, "2001 WIC Odyssey-A Quest for Quality Nutrition", will take place on April 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on April 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn South, 6820 S. Cedar, in Lansing. More than 600 people from across the state have registered for the conference with most participants coming from local health departments and other community agencies that offer WIC services.

"The WIC program plays an important role in the lives of many Michigan families," said Haveman. "We are proud to recognize these agencies for the work they do to protect children from deadly disease simply by reviewing their immunization record. Each and every day their efforts help to improve the lives of children and families."

Awards will be given to the WIC agencies that recently assessed the most participants for their immunization status, when they came in for WIC services. Agencies receiving awards are:

** The Huron County Health Department.

** District Health Department, #4, serving individuals in Alpena, Cheboygan, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties.

** Community Action Agency, in Lenawee County.

** Public Health Delta Menominee Counties

** District Health Department #2, serving individuals in Ogemaw, Alcona, Iosco and Oscoda counties.

** The Kent County Health Department.
