Governor John Engler today announced that the month of May has been declared Older Americans Month in Michigan. "Michigan is delighted to carry on this significant commemoration," Engler said, "one that celebrates the skills of older adults and their many civic and social contributions that enrich our communities."
Michigan joins the nation in endorsing this year's federal theme coined by the U.S. Administration on Aging: Older Americans Month 2001-The Many Faces of Aging. The Michigan Office of Services to the Aging is distributing posters highlighting this theme statewide. The posters also call attention to the new web site, www.MiSeniors.net a source of helpful information for older adults and their families.
"MiSeniors.net provides a wide array of services to meet the many different needs of seniors," said Michigan Office of Services to the Aging Director, Lynn Alexander. "It serves as a vital resource for children, grandchildren and others in their efforts to provide care for a loved one.
Many senior centers and other organizations serving older adults will host special events throughout Older Americans Month. For information on activities that may be planned in a specific area, individuals are encouraged to contact their regional Area Agency on Aging, or log on to www.MiSeniors.net and click on the Events Calendar.
The tradition of setting aside the month of May in honor of the country's older Americans began in 1963. Since then, every U.S. President has commemorated it, with many state governors following suit to proclaim it as a state celebration as well.
