Engler Declares World No-Tobacco Day as Clean Indoor Air Day in Michigan
May 30, 2001
Governor John Engler has declared World No Tobacco Day, May 31, as Clean Indoor Air Day in Michigan. The state's six regional clean indoor air networking groups joined forces to obtain proclamations in support of the Governor's declaration from city mayors, county commissioners, and health organization executives throughout the state. Local policy makers participating in the campaign are encouraged to adopt smoke-free policies for the day.
"The focus of the campaign is to increase awareness of the serious health issues associated with secondhand smoke," said Engler. "Secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in Michigan, killing at least 1,900 non-smokers every year. I am proud to designate Clean Indoor Air Day in Michigan and urge people to protect themselves from the dangers of secondhand smoke."
Secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in adults, low birth weight, sudden infant death syndrome, middle ear infection, sinus cancer and heart disease. Children exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased risk of developing serious lung problems including asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia.
"Parents can protect their children from the risks of secondhand smoke by not smoking in the house and car, and asking others to do the same," said Michigan Department of Community Health Director James K. Haveman, Jr.
