Two Michigan Hospitals Found to be Hospitals with Heart

June 19, 2001

Governor John Engler and Michigan Department of Community Health Director James K. Haveman, Jr., today applauded two Michigan hospitals that were recently named by Modern Maturity magazine to be of the top 15 "Hospitals with Heart" in the United States.

"The impressive designation of being a 'hospital with heart' means Bronson Methodist Hospital and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute are leaders in providing patient centered care and treating their patients with dignity and respect," said Engler.

"We are extremely pleased to see these Michigan hospitals noted for excellence," said Haveman. "We are also proud to see that of the 15 hospitals cited, Michigan led the nation with two hospitals recognized as outstanding centers for care."

Modern Maturity magazine is a publication of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

The magazine focused on hospitals adopting "patient-centered" care. This care focuses on treating everyone with dignity, sharing unbiased information with patients and their families, strengthening patients' sense of control and collaborating with patients, families and the community in deciding how the hospital looks and functions.
