dept of Community Health Holds Public Comment Period on the WIC Program
March 14, 2002
Michigan Department of Community Health Director James K. Haveman, Jr., today announced that the Department is accepting written comments from the public on Michigan's WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Supplemental Food Program through April 30, 2002.
"The WIC program is a valuable program serving women and children in need in Michigan," said Haveman. "Public comments and suggestions are important and useful ways for us to evaluate the program and ensure that it is effectively serving families."
The WIC program helps to correct or prevent malnutrition in low-income (at or below 185% of poverty) pregnant and breast feeding women; women who recently had a baby; infants; and children up to 5 years old who are at a health risk due to inadequate nutrition. WIC provides nutritious foods (via coupon) to supplement and help improve the diet, nutrition education and social services needs of enrolled families. Public comment, which is required by federal regulations, may be written on any aspect of the WIC program. These comments will be used by the Department to review WIC operations and to make program improvements. Written comments should be mailed to: Ms. Sheryl Darling WIC Division Bureau of Children and Family Programs Michigan Department of Community Health 2150 Apollo Drive, P.O. Box 30195 Lansing, MI 48906 Or email comments to: MichiganWIC@michigan.gov
