West Nile Update: Second Death Confirmed, Six New Cases Reported

The man had been hospitalized and died this morning. His is the second confirmed death with WNV in Michigan. An 80-year-old Wayne County man has died with West Nile virus (WNV), the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) confirmed today.
Six new cases were reported today, bringing to 21 the total number of human cases in Michigan. None of the new cases are confirmed. All six are probable and require additional testing. Eleven of the previous cases have been confirmed. Four others remain probable pending further test results.
The new cases are:
· A 62-year-old Eaton County man who was hospitalized and has been released
· A 47-year-old Oakland County woman seen in an outpatient setting
· A 42-year-old Oakland County woman seen as an outpatient
· A 39-year-old Kent County man seen in an emergency room
· A 54-year-old Kent County man was seen as an outpatient
· An 18-year-old Kent County man seen in an emergency room
"We continue to emphasize the need to take basic precautions to avoid mosquito bites," said MDCH Chief Medical Executive David R. Johnson. "These simple procedures will minimize the risk of a mosquito bite that could result in West Nile infection."
