Join National Kick Butts Day March 24, 2010

March 24, 2010

LANSING - Children and teens across the nation will rally against the tobacco industry on Wednesday, March 24th during the 15th annual Kick Butts Day, sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. While Kick Butts Day is recognized as an initiative to prevent youth from starting to use tobacco, it is also an incentive to encourage smokers to make an attempt to quit smoking.

According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, more than 1.6 million Michigan adults smoke and more than 70 percent of them would like to quit. If you or someone you know is thinking about quitting, there are many quit tobacco programs available in Michigan. Your insurance plan, including Medicare or Medicaid may pay for quit programs or even medications that could help.

Another valuable resource in helping people find effective ways to quit smoking is the Michigan Tobacco Quitline. Tobacco users who want to quit are urged to call the Michigan Tobacco Quitline, at 1-800-784-8669, or to log on to www.michigan.gov/tobacco, to get tools and information that will help them be successful. Quitline callers can receive free self-help materials and referrals to stop smoking programs in their own community. Callers without insurance or whose insurance does not offer a quitline or counseling service can enroll in a free program with the Michigan Quitline. Enrollees will receive up to five consultation calls to assist them in their effort to quit using tobacco.
