MDHHS Reaches Important Milestone in Licensing New Foster Homes
June 29, 2012
Lansing, Mich. June 29, 2012 - The Department of Health and Human Services is pleased to announce that it has reached the goal of licensing 1,300 new non-relative foster homes in the State of Michigan, ahead of the deadline required for compliance under the modified settlement agreement (MSA) reached in the federal case Children's Rights v. Snyder.
New foster parents have been recruited, trained and supported through the licensing process by not only MDHHS staff, but also by current and former foster parents, along with our dedicated partners outside the agency.
"We want to recognize all of the hard work put in by so many people, " said MDHHS Director Maura Corrigan. "In addition to our workers and our private agency partners, I would especially like to thank our faith-based partners, who took on our challenge by encouraging their congregations to step up and become foster parents."
The deadline for meeting the MSA foster home goal had been set for June 30, 2012, but the actual tally was reached by the agency one week early, on June 22, 2012, with the 1,300th new non-relative foster home being licensed.
As MDHHS works to remain in "substantial compliance" with the ongoing requirements of the MSA, and provide quality placement options for foster youth in its care, the agency and its partners will strive to meet the next goal of 1,450 new foster homes licensed by June 30, 2013.
