LANSING - The Children's Trust Fund (CTF) of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) will host an awards ceremony today, July 11, for the artists of the winning designs for the official State of Michigan Heirloom Birth Certificate.
The event will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Speaker's Library at the Capitol Building in Lansing. Artists from across the state were asked to submit a design for the official State of Michigan Heirloom Birth Certificate. The three winning artists are from Port Huron, Grand Rapids, and Harbor Springs. Each local artist will receive a $750 cash prize at the ceremony.
The Heirloom Birth Certificate legislation signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder in May 2011 is referred to as the "Pam Posthumus Law" in recognition of the late Pam Posthumus. Posthumus served on the CTF Board and was a true champion for the health and welfare of Michigan's children.
The new Heirloom Birth Certificate is intended to be a permanent memento for anyone born in the State of Michigan. While not an official birth record, the keepsake will showcase the individual's name, date of birth, place of birth and names of their parents. A portion of proceeds raised from the sale of the Heirloom Birth Certificates will go to the CTF to help prevent the abuse and neglect of children.

The CTF serves as Michigan's only source of permanent funding for the statewide prevention of child abuse and neglect. The CTF was established in 1982 by a bipartisan Michigan Legislature as an autonomous non-profit agency with the mission to champion child abuse and neglect prevention services throughout the State of Michigan. Since its establishment, the CTF has generated more than $60 million to support the mission of preventing child abuse and neglect by funding prevention services throughout the State of Michigan.
