LANSING - The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Director James K. Haveman issued the following statement about Patrick Barrie, former senior deputy director of the Mental Health Substance Abuse Administration at MDCH:
"The passing of Patrick Barrie, current executive director of the Washtenaw Community Health Organization, is a loss not only to those who knew him personally, but to the many Michigan residents whose lives have been touched by his commitment to behavioral health. I personally have lost a close friend and trusted colleague.
"Our sympathy extends from all at MDCH to his wife, Mary, and their sons, Phil and Cullen. Additionally, our thoughts are with the Washtenaw Board and his colleagues during this time. Patrick began working with MDCH in 1995 and during his time here through 2008, was instrumental in the shift to managed care within the mental health community.
"Patrick was a brilliant mind, and never failed to think outside of the box and find solutions to complex issues that people had never dreamed of before. He always approached a project by focusing on what was best for the consumer. Even in a recent phone call I had with him, Patrick reiterated his commitment to those in need in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Michigan residents have lost a true champion.
"Patrick Barrie was a loyal friend, and his passing is a huge loss to the MDCH family as he continually worked with us to develop policy changes for the betterment of Michigan residents. I have lost a trusted colleague that I relied on for ideas and support and will deeply miss his intuition and friendship."
