MDHHS Summarily Suspends Group Child Care Home License in Mason County

Lansing, Mich. May 3, 2013 -The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), Bureau of Children and Adult Licensing (BCAL), has issued an order of summary suspension and notice of intent to revoke the child care license of Mason County group child care home provider, Theresa Grimes, License #DG530307737, at 288 S. Gibson Rd., Walhalla, MI 49458.

This action resulted from a recent investigation of a complaint into the group child care home. The May 2, 2013, complaint investigation found violations of the Child Care Organizations Act and administrative rules regarding caregiver and child care home family and caregiver responsibilities. BCAL then took emergency action to protect the health, welfare, and safety of children.

Effective 6 p.m., May 2, 2013, the summary suspension order prohibits Theresa Grimes from operating a group child care home at any address or location. Accordingly, she may not accept children for care after that date and time. The order also requires Grimes to inform all of the parents of children in her care that her license has been suspended and that she can no longer provide child care.

Theresa Grimes has held a license to operate a group child care home for 12 children since June 1, 2010.

Michigan law defines a group child care home as "a private home in which more than 6 but not more than 12 minor children are given care and supervision for periods of less than 24 hours a day unattended by a parent or legal guardian, except children related to an adult member of the family by blood, marriage, or adoption. Group child care home includes a home in which care is given to an unrelated minor child for more than 4 weeks during a calendar year."

The licensee has the right to appeal this suspension. The case will be forwarded to the Michigan Administrative Hearing System (MAHS) for a hearing date.
