FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 13, 2013

LANSING - Statement from Michigan Department of Community Health Director James K. Haveman regarding the Community Health Budget signed today by Governor Rick Snyder:

"This is the third year in a row that our legislative partners have come together to not only pass the state budget early, but also to work together on funding crucial health services in our state.

"The fiscal year 2014 community health budget reflects our commitment to protect, preserve, and promote the health and safety of Michigan residents, and includes several exciting new initiatives that complement ongoing services to improve Michigan's health.

"In the community health budget, special attention was paid to mental health and behavioral health services and interventions for children, adults, and our veterans.

"Additionally, we received a funding increase for lead abatement, a critical need in our communities, and continued support of our local public health services, traumatic brain injury program, infant mortality efforts, nurse family partnership efforts, and our home visiting programs.

"Lastly, the legislature noted the importance of some very timely issues such as the continued expansion of Healthy Kids Dental and our services for individuals and families with autism.

"We have much work ahead of us as we continue to improve the health, wellness, and safety of our residents and we thank Governor Rick Snyder and our legislative partners in recognizing the importance of the work we do. The completion of this budget is another positive step forward in our efforts and look forward to continuing to work with our legislative partners on Medicaid reform and towards building a healthier, stronger Michigan."
