LANSING – The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) today announced the launch of a new website about infant mortality prevention. Governor Snyder has called special attention to focusing on the reduction of infant deaths in Michigan. In an effort to reduce Michigan’s high infant mortality rate and infant mortality rate disparity, the site www.michigan.gov/infantmortality provides comprehensive information, research and resources for families and providers.
Infant mortality is a critical indicator of the overall health and welfare of the people of Michigan. Infant mortality is associated with a variety of factors such as income, housing, education, employment, social support, cultural factors, mother’s health before pregnancy and access and quality of prenatal and infant care.
“Assuring access to accurate information and resources to all is an essential step in addressing our infant mortality problem but ensuring Michigan families have access to the information they need,” said James K. Haveman, Director of the MDCH. “We know that by educating mothers, fathers, caregivers, and more, we can prevent infant deaths and improve the health and outcomes for Michigan families.”
The website will serve as a resource for both families and providers with a variety of topics such as infant safe sleep, prenatal care, food and nutrition, family planning and more. The site includes a section for families with accurate information on infant health and women’s health before, during and after pregnancy.
In Michigan, seven out of every 1,000 babies die before their first birthday. Among Michigan's African-American population, the rate is 14 out of every 1,000 babies born. To address infant mortality and the high racial and ethnic disparities that exist in the state, MDCH released the Michigan Infant Mortality Reduction Plan in August 2012. The state plan outlines eight strategies to ensure babies survive and thrive, and can be found on the new website.
Infant mortality in Michigan is a top priority for Governor Snyder and is being measured on Michigan’s Health and Wellness dashboard www.michigan.gov/midashboard.
