Methods and Limitations

Hospitalizations per 1,000 adult people with diabetes (i.e., hospital discharge rates) were calculated using hospital discharge counts among Michigan adults (18 years and older) as the numerator and the estimated number of adults with diabetes in Michigan as the denominator. The denominator was estimated using 1) the unadjusted prevalence estimate based on 2023 MiBRFSS data (adults who reported ever being told that they had diabetes by a health professional), and 2) the 2023 adult Michigan bridged-race population estimate. The Michigan Resident Inpatient Files provides data on hospital discharges. Because hospital discharge data represents events rather than unique individuals, people who experience multiple hospitalizations within a year may be counted more than once. Therefore, discharge rates may not correspond directly to disease prevalence among individuals.

• Primary Diagnosis with Diabetes: Hospital discharges with diabetes listed as the primary diagnosis, identified by ICD-10-CM codes: E08.0–E08.6, E08.8–E09.6, E09.8–E10, E11.0–E11.6, E11.8–E11.9, E13.0–E13.6, E13.8–E13.9.

• Any Diagnosis with Diabetes: Hospital discharges with diabetes listed as either a primary or secondary diagnosis, identified by the same ICD-10-CM codes above.

• Cardiovascular Disease with Diabetes: Hospitalizations for cardiovascular disease (CVD) listed as the primary diagnosis and diabetes as a secondary diagnosis. CVD hospitalizations were identified using ICD-10-CM codes: I00–I09, I10–I15, I20–I25, I30–I52, I60–I78. Diabetes was identified using the ICD-10-CM codes listed above.
