Infection Prevention & Control

Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) can impact Michiganders of any age, from our youngest residents receiving care in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to our senior residents living in long-term care facilities.

HAIs are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Michiganders who acquire a HAI are more likely to experience longer durations of healthcare stays, increased risk of acquiring multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), increased risk of complications, unnecessary medical costs, and death.

Infection Preventionists (IPs) play a critical role within healthcare facilities preventing and controlling HAIs through surveillance, education, policy development, and outbreak response to keep our patients, staff, and visitors safe.
