PSC = Primary Stroke Center. Hospitals with the PSC designation have achieved Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers, awarded by The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Certified hospitals have demonstrated compliance with stroke-related standards and requirements, including program management, the delivery of clinical care, and performance improvement.

CSC = Comprehensive Stroke Center. Hospitals with the CSC designation have achieved Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers, awarded by The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. In addition to demonstrated compliance with the stroke-related standards and requirements of Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers, hospitals awarded the CSC designation have also met additional requirements related to advanced imaging capabilities, 24/7 availability of specialized treatments, and providing staff with the unique education and competencies to care for complex stroke patients.

TSC = Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center. Hospitals with the TSC designation have achieved Certification for Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Centers, awarded by The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Certification signifies the hospital meets rigorous standards for performing mechanical endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), a surgical procedure used to remove a blood clot from the brain during an ischemic stroke by threading a catheter through an artery in the groin to the brain.

** In March 2018, St. Joseph Mercy Oakland became the first hospital in the nation to earn Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission, in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
