Launching in early 2027, MiSCENE will bring together clinicians, healthcare professionals, community partners, and individuals with lived experience to learn, connect, and share ideas for improving sickle cell care across Michigan. Longstanding SCD partners will receive updates and invitations in the coming months. With questions about MiSCENE or about participating, please contact us at genetics@michigan.gov.

MDHHS Releases their Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Strategic Plan | February 2026
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) participated in SCD awareness events across the state, shared educational content on social media and published several reports about Michigan residents living with SCD. Building on these efforts, the Department is renewing its commitment to improving care, support, education and health outcomes for individuals living with SCD. The voices of individuals with SCD, their families and caregivers are central to the efforts underway and the updated strategic plan development. Through collaborative discussions with individuals living with SCD, their caregivers, healthcare providers, advocacy organizations, and community partners, MDHHS has identified six strategic goals to guide continued progress.

MDHHS Joins CMS Cell & Gene Therapy Access Model to Expand Access to Innovative Treatments | February 2026
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has elected to participate in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Cell & Gene Therapy Access Model, a groundbreaking initiative designed to improve access to FDA-approved cell and gene therapies through outcomes-based payment arrangements. Key Highlights of the Model: Collaborative Approach: Brings CMS, states, and drug manufacturers together to improve access to high-cost, innovative therapies. CMS Negotiated Contracts: CMS negotiates agreements with pharmaceutical manufacturers on behalf of states. Contracts include standardized access policies and pricing structures. Rebates and price concessions are tied to patient outcomes.
