Econ Mobility Project

Economic Mobility Project

Closing gaps for Black entrepreneurs to sustain thriving communities.

The Economic Mobility Project was launched by the Mobility Collective and the MDHHS Policy & Planning Bureau to support Black entrepreneurs in Lansing. From January through June 2025, the project provided mentorship, hands-on workshops and networking opportunities to help entrepreneurs build skills, confidence and stronger business connections.

Why This Work Matters

Although Black and African American people make up 14.4% of the U.S. population, they own only 3.3% of employer businesses and earn just 1% of total business revenue. The Economic Mobility Project was created to help address these gaps by supporting entrepreneurs with practical tools, peer connection and mentorship opportunities.

Workshop Focus Areas

Participants engaged in workshops focused on:

  • Mission, Vision, Values and Networking: Defining business purpose, values and goals.
  • Financial Literacy: Building confidence in navigating financial systems.
  • Work-Life Balance and Wellness: Promoting wellness and resilience among business leaders.
  • Developing a Personal Brand: Crafting authentic brands that support business growth.
  • Advocacy and Government Relations: Learning how to engage with local officials and influence support.
  • Networking for Business Growth: Strengthening coalitions to advance economic justice.

Project Impact

The project supported learning, networking and information sharing among entrepreneurs and community partners.

Key impact metrics include:

  • 150 participants across eight networking events.
  • 127 businesses engaged.
  • 30 participants sustained long-term coaching relationships.
  • 33 businesses joined the new Black Business Directory.
  • 40% of participants connected with mentors for growth and operations support.

Success Stories

One participant shared that learning to tell their business story helped build the confidence needed to pitch services to new clients.

Another participant deepened her mentorship connection and is now scaling her brand nationally, reigniting her vision of what is possible.
