Nearly 7,000 Entries Make Anti-Drug Contest a Success

Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Director James K. Haveman, Jr., today announced that nearly 7,000 Michigan students demonstrated the positive benefits of abstaining from drug use through their creativity in the third annual Partnership for a Drug-Free Michigan's "Winners Don't Do Drugs Because. . ." poster contest.
The partnership, a collaborative public and private effort administered by MDCH, is an aggressive public awareness campaign designed to warn every child, teen and parent in Michigan about the dangers of drug use. Each year, the numbers of students and schools participating in the poster contest have increased.
"Unfortunately, there is a perception that drugs are a reality and that they are not dangerous," said Haveman. "We know this is not true, but we need our children and teens to understand that drugs are harmful and addictive. The contest is great a way to engage our students in the battle against illicit drug use."
There were three grade classifications in the poster contest. They were grades 3-5; 6-8; and 9-12. K-Mart Incorporated provided prizes for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place winners. First place prizes were $100, second place prizes $75, third place prizes $50, and fourth place prizes $25. All awards were given in K-Mart cash awards.
