Commission on Services to the Aging to Meet Friday

March 15, 2001

Michigan Office of Services to the Aging Director, Lynn Alexander, today announced the Commission on Services to the Aging will meet on Friday, March 16, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will take place at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center on the campus of Michigan State University, South Harrison Road, East Lansing.

Immediately following the meeting, there will be a Gatekeeper of the Year Awards luncheon. Delbert Roy of Swartz Creek, a Gas Field Leader with Consumers Energy Company in Flint, has been named Gatekeeper of the Year for 2000 by the Commission and Office of Services to the Aging.

The Michigan Gatekeeper Program seeks to identify older adults at risk and, through a referral process, connect the person to services that may resolve their immediate problem. Supervisors of participating companies customarily make referrals to a network service agency for the aging.

Roy will be recognized for a referral he made for a 90-year-old customer who called the company saying the pilot was out on her furnace and the furnace itself was in need of repair. Upon investigation he found that a part needed to repair the furnace was no longer available. He then went out of his way to have the gas valve rebuilt that was needed to make the furnace operational. Roy also arranged for installation of a large print thermostat due to the customers failing eyesight.

"A gatekeeper symbolizes the type of individual who gets involved and contributes to the dignity of fellow human beings," said Alexander. "Delbert Roy personifies the generous actions of participants in this program who are able to see customers as human beings with needs."

Roy, a 16-year employee, is the 12th Consumers Energy Company participant to have been recognized with the annual award. The Gatekeeper Program has operated with both private and non-profit businesses since April 1987 and is assisted by the states 16 Area Agencies on Aging. Consumers Energy Company was the first to join the national initiative in 1987.

Roy was selected from a number of distinguished monthly gatekeeper award winners for the honor. Other Gatekeeper of the Month award winners, employed by Consumers Energy, for the year 2000 include:
