Engler Awards $656,217 to Genesee and St. Clair Counties for Summer Drug and Violence Prevention

Governor John Engler has awarded $656,217 in funds for summer programs incorporating drug and violence prevention, education, and other related activities. Port Huron and St. Clair County will receive $86,000 in funding.

"I am proud to support these programs that are making a positive difference in the lives of Michigan citizens," said Engler. These summer education and prevention efforts are extremely important in our fight against drugs."

"These grant dollars will play an important role in these communities," said Michigan Office of Drug Control Policy Director, Craig Yaldoo. "By encouraging positive activities, we can prevent drug and violence problems."

The St. Clair County Sheriffs Department in Port Huron, will receive $30,000 for the Summer TEAM (Teaching, Educating, And Mentoring) a program that serves 30 youth and their parents in enhancing social skills and help youth become aware of alternatives to drug involvement. The program plans to conduct the D.A.R.E program with assistance from deputies, high school seniors and college student mentors. Additional lessons will be presented on conflict resolution and anger management.

Save The Our Neighborhoods and Streets (S.O.N.S.) Program in Port Huron, will receive $19,000 to implement a seven-week summer prevention program entitled "Pressing For The Prize. " The S.O.N.S. Ministry program will target 100 students (6th-8th graders) and plans to incorporate the Character Counts curriculum with related fundamentals emphasizing the Six Pillars of Character.

Flint Odyssey House in Flint, will receive $37,000 for a summer literacy and character education prevention program targeting high-risk 4th graders in the Flint community and youthful offenders referred to the program. Older students receive training to serve as mentors and leaders for younger youth. The goal is to increase literacy skills and build character.
