Governor John Engler has awarded over $19 Million in funds for drug prevention and policing initiatives. Southwest Michigan will receive $1,325,011 in Byrne Memorial Formula and Local Law Enforcement Block grants for a one-year period beginning October 1, 2001.
"Statewide, these grants will play a positive role in the lives of children to prevent drug use and violence," said Engler. "They will also support crucial criminal justice programs to aggressively identify and prosecute drug dealers who destroy lives, families, and the quality of life within neighborhoods."
The grants focus on Community Policing, Juvenile Intervention, School Resource and Family and Domestic Violence Strategies, D.A.R.E. Programs, Drug Testing and Treatment for Juveniles and Adults, Multijurisdictional Task Forces, Money Laundering Task Forces, Prosecution, Criminal Justice Records Improvement and Computer Technology Strategies.
"These outstanding programs are making a difference in the lives of people in Southwest Michigan," said Craig Yaldoo, Director of the Office of Drug Control Policy. "We are proud to support these communities in their efforts."
Byrne Memorial Formula Grants:
** Kalamazoo County will receive $94,449 for Community Policing Strategies to fund the Kalamazoo County Neighborhood Prosecuting Attorney Program, which places attorneys in high crime neighborhoods to partner with non-profit and other groups to reduce crime.
** Battle Creek will receive $28,360 for Juvenile Intervention Strategies to fund G.R.E.A.T. and Strengthening Families curriculums, which will be implemented into the parks and recreation departments' after school and summer programs.
** The Berrien County Trial Court will receive $77,329 for Juvenile Intervention Strategies to provide new tools to court-ordered probation. Intensive supervision for home, school, jobs, after school programs and supervised recreation activities are offered as alternatives for the targeted junior and high school age youth.
** Western Michigan University will receive $350,000 for Juvenile Intervention Strategies to improve educational achievement and high school completion rates in Benton Harbor. The Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor will provide services to 500 to 1,000 youths.
** Albion will receive $28,319 for Family and Domestic Violence Strategies. The Albion Personal Protection Order/Domestic Violence Program assists victims of domestic violence and stalking situations.
** Allegan County will receive $49,353 for Family and Domestic Violence Strategies to fund an assistant prosecuting attorney for domestic violence prosecution, personal protection order enforcement and probation violation hearings.
** Barry County will receive $17,358 for Family and Domestic Violence Strategies to fund a Victim Services Coordinator to ensure a domestic violence victim's safety and rights throughout the criminal justice process.
** Calhoun County will receive $36,870 for Family and Domestic Violence Strategies to fund a specialized domestic violence unit within the Prosecutor's Office. The project will expand to include prosecutions for child abuse, criminal sexual conduct and elder abuse.
** The Kalamazoo County District Court will receive $39,870 for Family and Domestic Violence Strategies to fund a probation officer to partner with police to make a visible presence in the community and provide a higher level of victim safety and accountability.
** Bangor will receive $15,112 for School Resource Strategies to fund a school liaison officer to provide resources, support and assistance to local schools and students.
** The 48th Circuit Court/County of Allegan will receive $81,489 for Drug Testing and Treatment for Juveniles and Adults for substance abuse identification, assessment and intensive aftercare services.
** Kalamazoo County will receive $24,515 Drug Testing and Treatment for Juveniles and Adults for a Juvenile Drug Treatment Court for post-adjudicated delinquent youth who have substance abuse problems.
** The South West Enforcement Team, a Multijurisdictional Task Force, which operates in Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren counties will receive $311,560. They cooperate to investigate and prosecute illegal narcotics traffickers by undercover officers, uniformed officers, prosecutors, school officials, and citizens working together.
Local Law Enforcement Block Grants:
** Barry County will receive $44,427 for School Resource Strategies to fund DISTANCE, a school/police liaison program that provides services to all middle schools in Barry County and the Maple Valley Junior/Senior High. A Sheriff's Deputy will be assigned to assist schools in reducing truancy, delinquency, violence and other juvenile problems.
** Barry County will receive $126,000 for Computer Technology to fund the Barry Integration Preparation project, which will upgrade and enhance its electronic information technology by implementing a new countywide radio system.
Byrne Memorial Formula and Local Law Enforcement Block grants are available for competitive grant awards to state and local governmental entities. The Governor's Office of Drug Control Policy in the Michigan Department of Community Health administers the grants.
