Alzheimer's Safe Return Program Highlighted in Lansing
November 07, 2001
The Michigan Department of Community Health and the Alzheimer's Association Michigan State Council today announced that a statewide registration drive for the Safe Return program will take place on Tuesday, November 13 at numerous locations throughout Michigan. Governor John Engler has declared the month of November as Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month in Michigan.
"More than 166,000 people in Michigan are afflicted with Alzheimer's disease," said Michigan Department of Community Health Director James K. Haveman, Jr. "Raising awareness of the Safe Return program is an important effort in our fight against this disease."
One of the behaviors associated with Alzheimer's disease is wandering, causing individuals to become disoriented and lost. Nearly 60 percent of people with Alzheimer's disease will wander during the course of the disease, sometimes frequently. This behavior can be dangerous, even life threatening to individuals and can be very stressful for caregivers.
The Alzheimer's Association's Safe Return program is a nationwide identification, support and registration program designed to help identify, locate and return to safety individuals who wander because of Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. For a one-time fee of $40, program registrants receive a stainless steel identification bracelet or necklace, clothing labels and wallet cards. These identification products are inscribed with the Safe Return 24-hour crisis number and alert others that the individual is memory-impaired and may need assistance.
When a wanderer is discovered, the person who finds him can call the Safe Return toll-free number located on the identification items. The Safe Return operator immediately alerts the family members or caregivers listed in the database so the person can be reunited with loved ones. If a family calls to report someone missing, the registry has fax access to 17,000 law enforcement agencies throughout the country and will provide an up-to-the date picture and descriptive information to assist in search and rescue efforts. Safe Return offers support to families through trained clinicians and a network of more than 200 Alzheimer's Association offices.
The Alzheimer's Association works to train law enforcement, emergency medical technicians, public safety and public transportation employees to help them become better informed on how to recognize, communicate with and respond to a memory-impaired adult.
"The Office of Services to the Aging has been proud to support the Michigan Alzheimer's Association in their efforts to train law enforcement on the Safe Return program," said Michigan Office of Services to the Aging Director Lynn Alexander. "This extraordinary program can literally save lives."
"Currently, only 2,508 people in the state are registered in the Safe Return program, yet there are potentially 99,000 Michiganians with Alzheimer's Disease at risk of wandering," said Sara Duris, Public Policy Coordinator for Michigan State Council, a coalition of the Michigan Alzheimer's Association chapters. "We encourage people to get their loved ones registered in this vital program or to contact the Alzheimer's Association chapter nearest you for more information."
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior, ultimately leaving its victims totally incapable of caring for themselves. It affects males and females of all ethnic and socioeconomic groups equally.
